I took this phrase from Edgar Allen Poe. I don't remember what the original context was but I like how it sounds. I think that a person like me, coming from an impoverished Mexican-American upbringing, needs every ounce of strength and courage just to rise up to be college educated/ middle class. It takes everything right down to the very marrow of my bones.
